Things that are not testing Submission based editorials
Almost everyone seems to want to shoot them - which is odd as they are unlikely to be paid.

If this is the intention from the outset then be up front about it and call it what it is.

Speculative Work
Any work where payment is not fixed before production - for example if some or all of the payment is conditional on a campaign running. This should always be avoided.

Be aware that proponents of this practice often advocate having several parties complete the work and then choosing one to use and perhaps pay. This means others will have invested the time, effort and money to complete a brief with no return.

Do this one free and the next one will be paid
Occasionally heard, it could also be translated as “do this one free and we will shoot the next one on the same (ie free) basis with someone else.

Commercial shoots
It may seem strange, but we’ve heard of a number of clients approaching people listed on this site and asking them to undertake commercial work such as look books on an unpaid basis.

TFP
Shoots where team members are "paid" with prints. Consider this a form of bartering not testing. Get everyone to sign a release so the photographer can then profit from the shoot. Don't enter into this kind of shoot unless everyone is clear about the details and happy to do so.
Mariza Bairaktari - stylist A young stylist living in London whose vocabulary doesn’t include the sentence “I love fashion.” I never considered myself someone who lives for fashion.
But my self-perceptions are perhaps a little slanted because when asked if those closest to me would consider me a "fashionista", my response is an unwavering, “well yes, probably”(accompanied by the sincerest of smiles as I look to the ground and laughs).
The truth is, my ambitions have always been far too grounded to allow myself to dream so big as to “love fashion.”
Latent as they may be, my dreams surface in the form of a long-time addiction to magazines & fashion shows. And of late, I harbor a very strong affinity for the European glossy's.
This is my take on style: the cultures, the people, the blogs, the ART and the trends that inspire me everyday.
If your previous application was rejected what is different this time? We don’t give feedback so it is up to you to make those changes. If you have been listed before you should show progression.

We ask people to state their reason for wanting a listing. Show your imaginative here! What are you looking to achieve in the next 6 months? What creative direction would you like to take? What should other people know about you before making contact. Are there things you are not interested in that would save unnecessary contacts?

The term shooting for submission has become a cliché. Testing for submission is an oxymoron.

Learn how to resize images and be innovative with them. Montages are a great way to add additional work.

We recommend that you make use of embedded IPTC information, discrete watermarks are a reasonable alternative.

Considering a low or unpaid commision? Should you consider a low or unpaid commission?

Generally no, if a picture (or video now) is worth publishing it is worth paying for.

But fashion photography is a heavily oversubscribed industry and there is a lot of pressure for people to undertake unpaid work.

So ask these questions:

Is it an editorial for a magazine of sufficient influence and quality that the stylist on the shoot can pull pretty much any brand they want?

Can you source models from a recognised agency and having discussed with them the use get them to work unpaid?

Get a "yes" for both of those and it could be worth considering. Get just one "no" and that is your signal to charge a proper rate.

But before you rush in, just check if there are any ominous terms that you would be agreeing to. Copyright grabs being just one example. If you are not sure what is good or bad within a contract seek advice such as http://www.own-it.org/
Types of work Advertising, editorial and commercial - terms that are used to differentiate both the style of images and how they are used.

Commercial
Loose term that could simply mean any paid work.
Can also refer to a style that is less esoteric and more day to day.

Editorial (usage)
Shoot or image use commissioned by a newspaper, magazine or website. In fashion (only) pay is often inversely proportional to the kudos of the publication. However unpaid or expenses only offers on the basis of good exposure should be viewed with extreme scepticism. Fashion photography is unusual in being the only area where editorial is considered a means to an end rather than a goal in its own right.

Editorial (style)
Images where the photography, styling or appearance of a model it is considered cutting edge, extreme or quirky but may simply be less polished than a similar advertising shoot.

Advertising (usage)
Shoot or image used to promote a product, brand or service. In the case of magazines etc placement is paid for by the client and is therefore assured (unlike PR). This kind of use typically attracts the highest rates of pay for the photographer and team.Advertising (style)Often the most opulent images presented, due in part to the budgets available. The style is often such that there is no doubt which of several elements in the shot is the advertised product. However it may present a lifestyle that is supported by the product or brand.

Advertorial (usage)
An advertising shoot created to match the style of a publication so it may take the appearance of an editorial feature or review. Pay rates should be closer to those of advertising than editorial.

PR (usage)
Press Release or promotional images shot to be distributed by the client or their agency to publications. Placement is not guaranteed. Rates, although higher than editorial, are lower than advertising.

Speculative work
Any work that is undertaken for a specific client (including editorial) where payment is conditional on use is considered speculative. It should be avoided.

Working Practices How you work and the way the resulting images are used can have a significant impact on the way you are paid.

Here a a few common terms to help you though this.

Please be aware that the terms below may subject to differing interpretations - you are strongly advised to clarify the details to avoid costly misunderstandings.

Commission
Any work where a client requests you to shoot for them. The brief, payment and usage terms to be agreed prior to the shoot. Although the fee will be determined by the terms of use is it not conditional. In the majority of cases, this is what you should be aiming for. The work is requested, you deliver, you get paid.

Shooting for stock
Images may be submitted to stock agencies or libraries who will then supply them to clients. More common for non-fashion work.
You will have limited, if any, control of who uses the image, in what way or for how long. It is vital that everyone involved in the shoot is fully aware of this and agrees in advance. Ensure model releases/booking forms are in order. Some parties may refuse such open terms.
The end client may be purchasing a licence with rights managed or a royalty free agreement. Be sure you are aware of the implications of each method as the differences are significant and at times controversial.

Speculative Work
Typically relates to work undertaken for a specific client but where payment is made conditional on some aditional factor. The client request would be "shoot it, and we will pay for it if we like or use it". This practice should be avoided.

Submission
Work shot for editorial use but without a commission in place. Images are then presented to one or more magazines/websites for consideration. Be cautious as this can fall under the category of speculative work (see above).

Tests and Usage

Tests and Usage What follows should be considered as a guideline only. It does not provide legal definitions, but simply common understanding of the terms. In otherwords, make your own agreements with all concerned and stick to them. If you are not sure of the legalities involved you could start by visiting http://own-it.org

Yeah, we know everyone is clamoring over each other to get the best images in their books. But sometimes you need to just ask 'at what cost?' and with what restrictions?

By all accounts a 'test' refers to usage terms that are along the lines of: For direct personal promotion, portfolio, compcards and agency books/websites ONLY.

You will also see the standard term in model agency terms: TEST AND EXPERIMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY The photographer is not entitled to use test and experimental photographs for commercial purposes unless specific arrangements have been made with the agent before the photographic session.

Remember that the buck stops with the photographer - as copyright owner on all images they are the ones with final responsibility for the use of any pictures, with the additional burden that it is they who will take the flack in the case of any unauthorized use.

No Client Involvement
Anything relating to testing only applies when there is no one involved in the shoot other than the creative team plus models - so as soon as there is anyone that could be viewed as a client (even if they claim not to be) forget the idea of 'test' and price it as a commercial or editorial job depending on the usage.

Not Testing
Small client who does not have much budget. Call it what it is - a paid shoot with little or no budget, then decide whether you want to do it or not.
A client asks you to shoot an idea on the basis that if they like the results they will hire you for the next job. You should charge for this situation,
You are asked to shoot but will only get paid if the images are actually used. This is called speculative work and should always be avoided.
Direct personal promotion means just that - you can use those pictures to promote yourself , and only by the methods mentioned.
It doesn't allow promotional use for anything else you might be involved with So if you are also running, say, a shop or salon you can't use the pics to promote that without permission from everyone involved - and they are well within their rights to either ask for payment or even say no.
Likewise no putting the images from a test onto record covers for those models turned singers, or theatre posters/programs for actors - again thats commercial use and you need to get permission and cross a few palms with gold. Magazine features are also out unless agreed in advance.
Don't use pictures as bribes!
Its all too easy to get sucked into a deal where some fabulous location (hotels and bars are the main ones here) will let you shoot in their venue in return for some of your images. Designers may also suggest that giving them photographs in return for use of their clothes is a fair swap. If they want to put them in a portfolio - all well and good.

However, if those pictures end up being used as PR shots, or in paid advertisements you are in trouble. At the very least you are being ripped off. In the case of locations, their fees are ALWAYS going to be less than the usage rate for PR or AD use for the same location (ie they should be paying you).

Worse, you could also find yourself liable for paying off everyone involved - and you might be surprised at what photographers and model agencies normally charge for commercial use if you have only ever worked on tests.

Students beware or beware of students?
There are horror stories of colleges asking students to sign over copyright in their course work. This can lead to a number of problems. For the students themselves it means you won't get paid if those images are used commercially. Worse, you won't have control over those images. Colleges have been known to subimit students work for publication even though the models used were booked as a test. This use is outside the terms of a test and the photographer becomes liable for a hefty bill.

Remember too that if you are working with fashion student collections normal copyright law applies, even if the student has signed over their rights to their work (the clothes) the photographer still owns the copyright of the photographs.

TFP or TFCD
The description TFP or TDCD also appears regulary online. In this case one or more of the parties are deemed to be paid by the photographer rather than working on a shared collaboration, with payment being in prints or images on CD - which clearly have value. If you are being paid it is reasonable for the model to sign a release and expect the photographer to sell those images. If you are not happy with such an arrangement don't enter into it!
Sayings and things A few modern day proverbs to help you on your way. Interpret them as you will.

The more you tell people your goals the less likely you are to achieve them.

No good deed goes unpunished.

A fool learns from his own mistakes, a wise man learns from the mistakes of others.

Vision without action is a dream. Action without vision is a nightmare.

A tale:
Once upon a time , an old man was sitting at the turning to his town. A younger man approached him.

"Hello" said the younger man. "i'm looking for a new home. Could you tell me what the people in this town are like please?"
"First tell me what the people were like in the town you have just come from" said the old man.
"Well, they were rude, impatient, and didn't really care for anyone but themselves" said the young man.
The old man shook his head. “I’m afraid you will find the people here are just the same.”
The young man turned and went the other way.

A little while later another young man approached.
"Hello” said the younger man. "i'm looking for a new home. Could you tell me what the people in this town are like please?"
"First tell me what the people were like in the town you have just come from” said the old man.
"Oh, they were warm and kind, they would always help each other"
The old man smiled "I think you will find the people here are just the same"

How to make more money when freelance. A few tips to help make more money.

send more invoices
send larger invoices
spend less money
take less time doing it

How you achieve that is obviously not easy. Start by considering how any given decision you face could be used to improve one of the statements above.
Will buying some new item really mean you get more work and therefore lead to sending more invoices?

Would training give you skills that will result in sending larger invoices?

Can you delay buying something until you have got the job that requires it rather than spending money in the hope that it will get you work?

You will often have to balance one against another: paying someone else to do your admin/retouching/returns makes financial sense if the time saved can be used to do the work that lets you send more invoices.

If you feel overloaded with work but can not afford to pay someone to do some of it you are probably not charging enough.

Time taken on activities that are not billable should be to cut down as much as possible. Meetings, phonecalls, tidying your desk/studio/bags/website again all cost you time and therefore money. This is irrespective of how many times you say to yourself, and everyone else via your blog/Twitter, that you are hard at work.
